QCRI MIT Computer Science Partnership: Building Qatar Tech Talent

A seven-year visual documentation project capturing joint computer science research, keynote lectures, and student workshops between QCRI and MIT CSAIL in Doha.

Documenting Seven Years of Computer Science Innovation

The partnership between Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI) and MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) represented a major leap forward for regional technology research. Over seven years, the flagship QCRI-MIT Annual Meet served as the primary gathering point for scientists, engineers, and policymakers working across both institutions.

My objective was to build a comprehensive visual archive of this collaboration. The focus was not simply to document speeches at a podium, but to record the genuine exchange of ideas and show how joint research was actively strengthening Qatar’s internal technology ecosystem.

Capturing Intellectual Sparks and Keynote Moments

Photographing complex research topics like cybersecurity, Arabic language processing, and big data requires looking for the human energy behind the algorithms. The annual summit brought together world-class computing pioneers, including robotics expert Daniela Rus and database legend Michael Stonebraker.

I focused on capturing the intensity of these keynotes alongside the unscripted interactions that followed. The camera documented spontaneous debates in the corridors, whiteboards covered in handwritten logic equations, and small group discussions where researchers from Cambridge and Doha solved problems side by side. Showing this collaborative friction was key to conveying the true value of the partnership.

Encouraging the Next Generation Through Coding Workshops

Beyond high-level academic discussions, a vital component of the summit was community outreach through the Coding is Cool workshops. These sessions brought secondary school students into the conference space to learn directly from leading researchers.

Documenting these workshops was one of the most rewarding aspects of the assignment. I photographed senior MIT and QCRI scientists sitting beside local students, guiding them through their very first lines of code. These photographs provided clear visual proof of the programme’s commitment to nurturing homegrown tech talent and inspiring young Qataris to pursue careers in computer science.

Creating an Institutional Archive for Global Outreach

The resulting media library became the visual archive for the joint programme. The photography was deployed by both QCRI and Qatar Foundation.

By recording every stage of the summit, from keynotes and technical breakout sessions to youth workshops, the imagery provided stakeholders with concrete evidence of what international scientific cooperation can achieve when backed by long-term investment.
