CASE STUDY | PHOTOGRAPHY & DRONE
"Promoting diversity, inclusivity, and accessibility in outdoor fitness and adventure."
Muslim Hikers.
Summary.
Muslim Hikers hosts monthly guided hikes that prioritise safety and cultural considerations to ensure comfort for participants from underrepresented backgrounds.
These events provide a platform for first-time hikers to gain confidence, receive peer support, and build lasting friendships, thus dismantling the perception that outdoor spaces are exclusive.
I document hikes with candid portraits and action shots, focusing on expressive moments—smiles at summits, helping hands on rugged paths, and shared laughter at rest points to humanise the narrative and showcase participants’ journeys. These images feature on social media, providing an immediate, relatable window into the community’s diversity and camaraderie
Historical Context.
Muslim Hikers, founded during the 2020 lockdown by Haroon Mota under the Active Inclusion Network, empowers Muslim and South Asian communities to explore and enjoy the outdoors through culturally sensitive, beginner-friendly hikes. By organising regular walking events—from local woodlands to national parks—the project breaks down barriers of representation and access, fostering a supportive network where participants motivate one another to discover nature’s benefits. My photography and drone videography amplify these efforts by capturing authentic on-trail moments and sweeping aerial perspectives, creating compelling visual stories that challenge stereotypes and inspire broader outdoor inclusivity.
On-Trail Photography.
The drone footage I take elevates the storytelling by revealing the group’s scale and movement across dramatic landscapes, contrasting human figures against sweeping moorlands and cliff edges to symbolise collective empowerment.
